United Way Brings Service Providers, Citizens Together
Since 1938 United Way has been bringing our community
together to focus on the most important human needs — building
partnerships, forging consensus and leveraging resources to make a
measurable difference. United Way and its member agencies focus on
community needs — helping children and youth succeed, strengthening and
supporting families, promoting self-sufficiency, partnering to insure
vital and safe neighborhoods, and supporting vulnerable and aging
populations. A lot has changed since 1938. But the one thing that has
remained the same is the giving spirit of Ponca City. It’s the spirit
that rallies citizens to contribute their time, treasure and talent; the
spirit of everyone pitching in to help others.
Every Year, United Way of Ponca City holds a fundraising campaign to
allow citizens and businesses to support community programs and services
offered through United Way and its 13 member agencies. A vast network of
volunteers keep administrative expenses low, averaging 12 percent of all
funds received. This figure compares favorably with Better Business
Bureau guidelines of up to 35 percent. We don’t measure results by how
much money we raise or distribute, although that’s important. We look at
the lives and communities that have improved. Those are results you can
see.
Helping support the 13 member agencies is only one aspect of United Way.
United Way leveraged over $500,000 in federal, state, and foundation
grants to bring programs to Kay County to help build a stronger
community. United Way-sponsored programs include AmeriCorps, Success By
6/Smart Start Kay County and Homeless Management Information System (HMIS).
They all have community partners, both private and public, who help make
the projects a success. They work together as a team along with
volunteers to provide training, in-kind resources, time and talent. It's
not about ownership or credit; it's about partnerships and results. For
