COMMUNITY

Fifty-Nine churches represent and nurture the community's Protestant, Jewish, and Catholic religious beliefs. Ponca City offers a diversity of facilities and activities to residents and visitors alike.

Public facilities include a 70,000 volume public library, which offers satellite educational courses at post-secondary levels; 27 parks and play-grounds; 16 tennis courts; 12 baseball and softball diamonds; an 18-hole golf course; indoor (2,500 seat) auditorium and outdoor (6,000 seat) rodeo arena, and several museums, including:

Ponca City has been repeatedly recognized by the Oklahoma State Historical Society for efforts in historical preservation.

The community provides a wide variety of individual and team sport competitions. Cultural opportunities include community concerts, civic orchestra, an extensive community theater season, and an active art association.

Community residents support an active YMCA, complete with six racquetball courts, gymnasium, steam room, Jacuzzi and sauna, a 25 meter swimming pool, as a well planned year-round program. The Ponca City Country Club features an 18-hole golf course, swimming pool, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, as well as dining room, lounge, and banquet facilities. Reciprocal arrangements exist with 38 country clubs in Oklahoma, 14 in Dallas-Fort Worth area, 10 in Houston, and numerous others throughout the country. A dynamic United Way program serves 17 community-based organizations with a broad base of volunteers and an annual budget in excess of $650,000.00.

  • Lake Ponca: Two miles east of Ponca City, covering 1,500 surface acres and providing boating, sailing, fishing, skiing, and picnic facilities.
  • Kaw Lake: Eight miles east of Ponca City, covering 17,000 surface acres with 170 miles of shoreline and 12 public use areas, camping, fishing, boating, duck and geese hunting, swimming, picnic areas, an eight-mile hiking trail, and two marinas.

MUNICIPALITY

The City of Ponca City operates under a Commission-Manager form of government, whereby the legislative and policy-making body consists of a Mayor and four Commissioners elected at large, with three-year terms of office staggered to lend continuity to City operations. A professional City Manager is appointed by the Mayor with the approval of the Commission and serves as the Chief Operations. A Police Force of 55 officers dedicate themselves to work in partnership with the community to fight crime, reduce fear and improve the quality of life offering 12 active Community Policing Projects involving citizenry of all ages. The officers partner with the community to combat juvenile and criminal problems and continually strive to provide fair and impartial law enforcement for all citizens of Ponca City. The municipality's fire department operates the ambulance service. 57 of the fire departments 64 full-time personnel, including the Chief, are state and nationally certified as an Emergency Medical Technician. The City maintains fire insurance classification rating of "4" within the city limits. Outside the city limits, the rate varies from "8" to "10", depending on location. Additional services provided by Ponca City's municipal government include airport operations, water, sewer, and electric utilities, cultural and recreational facilities, as well as traditional public works and safety programs.
