 The rhythmic beat of a
hiker's walk; the click-click-clunk of a changing bicycle gear; the gentle nicker of a horse to his rider companion, the roar of ATVs -- these are
the sounds of Kaw Lake's specialty trails.
The Eagle View Hiking Trail is for hikers and mountain bikers. Depending
on who you talk to, the trail is between nine and 13 miles long. It runs
pretty close to the lake shoreline from Osage Cove, by the dam to Burbank
Landing, east of Kaw City.
Overnight camping is available at Osage Cove from March 1 to November 30
and at McFadden Cove and Sandy Park year-round.
For those who prefer equine assistance on their rambles, the Five Fingers
Equestrian Trail is approximately 18 miles of horseback adventure. It runs
parallel to the shoreline from Burbank Landing to Sarge Creek Cove.
Groups can camp
overnight with their horses at the Sarge Creek Cove in the group camping
area only. Provisions at the group camping area include ten electrical
hook-ups, water, covered shelter and a large area for tent camping.
However, there are no fenced areas for keeping horses; portable corrals or
line tethering is recommended. The fee for the group camping is $110 per
night and reservations are required.
Drivers, start your engines! The off-road vehicle (ORV) area at Kaw Lake
is located approximately two miles east of Kaw City on Highway 11 near the
Sarge Creek recreation area. It covers approximately 80 acres and is, for
the most part, heavily wooded. The area is best suited for small ATVs and
dirt bikes and is not open to dune buggies, Jeeps or similar vehicles.
Open seven days a week, year-round, the ORV area is equipped with a
parking lot, vault toilet facilities and potable water. Overnight camping
facilities are available at Sarge Creek Cove for $17 per night per unit.
Campsites have water and electrical hookups.
Safety precautions on all three specialty trails are strongly recommended.
Proper equipment, preparation for possible weather conditions and good
judgment will all help insure a pleasurable outdoor experience.
Camping along any of the
trails is prohibited -- all of the area surrounding Kaw Lake is designated
for day-use only. The Eagle View and Five Fingers Trails are both closed
during deer season in the fall.

country, more than 300 campsites and three specialty trails, you're
looking at hours of outdoor entertainment. Whether you're hiking, biking,
or riding a horse or three-wheeler, Kaw Lake has unique areas set aside
just for you.
